Children and credit cards, what they must learn from you!
Are children and credit cards a recipe for disaster? They can be, but this is up to you! Children will be exposed to credit cards eventually and the sooner you teach them the importance of financing the better!
Children and credit cards! Just the thought of this is enough to put parents into a spin cylce! Where do you begin? When is too early? late? or just the right time? Questions questions questions! If your kids are like most, they have already learned about the treasures of having money at an early age, but how well they handle this is up to you!
For children who have never developed good money habits, credit cards can be an easy fix for when the money runs out. At some point your children will want an allowance and if you structure this right, they will learn good money management habits early.
One of the best ways to educate children about the importance of credit cards is long before they are old enough to apply for one or become an authorised user on someone elses account, even yours. Let your children make mistakes and find out what happens when money runs out. This can be not being able to buy that toy all the way up to your teenager not being able to pay the car insurance bill when it is due.
Having to do without and walk or ride the bike to work will do wonders for self establishment of will power for learning about responsible credit and money management! Just remember not to be too hard on young children. Youngsters are not great managers of much at an early age and protecting them from the dangers of running out of money won't teach them anything except that they can become dependent on you! Do you really want to become the First National Bank of Mom and Dad?
Children and credit cards are becoming a way of life and some credit cards are actually being marketed at children, with their parents permission of course.
This is not necessarily a bad thing since early responsible usage of credit and building a good credit history will turn children into responsible adults. I have recommended articles when they are good ones and I'm about to again right now. I have published a few knowlegeable articles that have attracted the attention of University Professors who say good things about my published articles. I'm going to include a link to one here.
Children and credit cards.
The comments I received have made me even more determined to write more and learn plus teach more. I, like any other author, likes it when what I write about helps people and I enjoy doing so. I decided to include this particular topic because my parents were not the greatest managers of much, especially money and these lessons I talk about now concerning children and credit cards is one I had to learn the hard way.
When I look back now, it would have been so much easier to have learned these lessons earlier in life and with the sheer amount of bankruptcies and the current credit crunch, I feel this is an all to common problem ignored for far too long. If children are not great managers of much at an early age, I would include myself here.
I was fortunate enough to realise that this wasn't working for me earlier than most just because I had no one else to fall back on and this was my best learning experience of all!
Now let's move on to the next page because there are things I still need to share with you from my own experiences.
