Children and credit cards, what they must learn from you!
Wait, children and credit cards? I know. It sounds like a big mistake, doesn't it? It has been proven that children, although not great managers of much when they are young, are better spenders and more savvy money managers IF they are given the opportunity to try managing credit at an early age!
Now this could be getting credit from you, such as against an allowance, and teaching them the advantages and mistakes of money management!
Children and credit cards. Sounds kind of impossible to blend these two things together, doesn't it? Yet if children never learn to manage money, they will still be children with credit cards, even as adults! One of the things I really and honestly believe would be a great help would be to bring up the subject of money at the dinner table.
Although some of us may think this is not appropriate during dinner, it is the one time for families to get together where everyone wants to talk about their day and money can be brought into the topics easily when put into the context of world affairs for older children. And the value of the dollar and how it affects us at home for younger children too.
Even younger children will ask sometime when they have been saving up for something and now want to know why it cost more than it did before!
Encourage your children to express themselves and ask questions about money matters. Engage your kids in money discussions, from allowances and spending to what interest is and how it affects your pocket money. This is something that children will understand if laid out for them a little at a time.
You will also be laying the groundwork for questions about credit and credit cards and the possibility that one of your kids might want to finance something one day. This is a good time to help put this in perspective for them and will open the door to finance and credit, lessons that will last a lifetime!
I have written articles on Ezine that have been noted for their forward thinking! I really think that if I had these money lessons myself at a young age, I could have avoided the troubles I had to deal with later in life, possibly even Identity theft!
